I Wonder . . .
“Developers”
The videogame industry is, by all measures besides profitability, an industry still in its infancy. The movie industry has been around for a century. The music industry has been around even longer. As the little brother of the entertainment family, the games industry has had to fend for itself in learning how to grow and handle issues. One of the best examples of the industry “learning on its feet” lies in the example of the ESRB (explored elsewhere in this volume).
This process of self-directed maturation can also be seen in how the industry has created its own conventions, its own mythos, and its own realities. Look at some of the questions developers must have had to ask themselves along the way . . .
1 Is it easier to fight in a thong?
2 Do all sewers contain gold coins?
3 Is fruit a good thing or a bad thing?
4 Do all videogame characters get free breast enhancement surgery?
5 Should we model torn and dirty clothing for sports games first or for games that demand the main character wade through a Rhode Island sized puddle of mud?
6 Can one person kill an entire army?
7 Can one person carry enough weapons, power up items, healing power, and telecommunications to kill an entire army?
8 Why does the world get blurry when you drive fast?
9 Should police departments really be driving Porches and Lamborghinis?
10 Is it really THAT easy to perform a carjack?
11 Is it really THAT easy to get mob connections and start making money on the side?
12 Why do zombies always walk as if the world is tilted horribly to the right?
